Applications
Use of ‘smart home’ technology can offer solutions for people with disabilities; enabling and empowering the individual by providing support for everyday tasks.
Bespoke technology within the home can:
Provide an environment that can ensure the resident is safe
Alarm/Entry Systems can be specified using Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) or Speakerphones so the householder can control those legitimately wishing to gain access to the home. This can be combined with remote door opening. An Entry Phone or Videophone means they can hear or see for who is there. Entry codes, card readers or key pads enable regular visitors to have unrestricted access, whilst requiring unexpected visitors to reveal their identity.
Automate specific tasks that an individual is unable
to perform.
Automatically-programmed windows, window blinds and curtains can add a further level of security and comfort. This feature can be integrated with the lighting control to provide maximum efficiency. Automatic room-to-room actuation of lighting, controlled by sensors, makes it much easier to safely move around in the evening. Handheld controllers can enable a variety of tasks such as switching devices on and off or controlling the ambient lighting in a room. |

Provide a safe and secure environment by alerting the user, carers or emergency services of potentially dangerous situations.
Panic buttons situated at strategic locations and portable devices worn by occupants can be linked to the security system, enabling help to be summoned should an emergency of any type arise. Links to fire detection systems or security alarms can be set to summon the emergency services.
Enable a comfortable living environment.
Central heating can be programmed automatically, requiring little or no programming by the user. Remote control allows armchair intervention.
Water Temperature can be controlled by taps equipped with a Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV), delivering water at the correct temperature for hand washing and bathing reducing the risk of scalding for the young, elderly or infirm.
Showers and baths can be pre-programmed to deliver the correct temperature and as well as increasing safety this can also reduce energy consumption in the home. |
